the trainers were also involved in programmes aimed at the vietnamese population as part of press aid to vietnam and the swedish media aid to the vietnamese population. this included activities such as mentoring young vietnamese journalists, training officials and news agency journalists, and publishing vietnamese-language newspapers and magazines. another trainer [trainer 3] described how they initiated a training on how to become a journalist in vietnam.

for the vietnamese journalists, it was a great experience because it was a very different culture. we were used to it but they were a bit shocked by it. it was also a [training] they could give back to the swedish media. we were good at the swedish way of journalism and the vietnamese way of journalism is quite different. we were able to share our good knowledge and experience on their way of journalism and they were able to see how we did it and learn from it. [trainer 3]

the trainers were also involved in the broader aid to vietnam and the swedish aid to vietnam, including publications that conveyed good ideas and methods on how to improve layout editing and photojournalism. the swedish newspaper editors were very keen on the vietnam. they were all really interested in the vietnam and the vietnam war. they were all completely different from here. the swedish editors were not really interested in the vietnamese when they were here. [trainer 1]

the vietnamese journalists were not really interested in the swedish editors when they were here. they were more interested in the swedish editors and the swedish media. so, it was natural for them to say that it was a positive thing. they were positive that the swedish editors had this interest in the vietnamese. the editors were not here so they had the chance to see what was going on in vietnam. [] they had first-hand knowledge. the vietnamese journalists had a kind of interest that they had not had before. [trainer 3]

the lessons from the three-phase project were used to draw up an action plan with the aim of completing the project from august 1999 until june 2004. the action plan was discussed with the vietnam sida in february 2004. the project was then approved by the swedish government in august 2004. the project was completed in september 2006. it focused on building capacity at the radio stations and the national television and radio programmes to strengthen the media institutions and to increase the ownership of the media by the state. the project aimed to change the way the radio stations operated. it also aimed to change the production routines and to introduce media ethics at the stations. during this time, the number of journalists at the radio stations increased from 20 to 75 (hoang 2017 ).
in 2015, the swedish agency for education and research in vietnam (slu), in collaboration with vso, launched the training and capacity building project in vietnam (daleng 2014 ). the project aimed to introduce the vietnamese university students to the swedish language and swedish culture, and improve their ability to work in a university setting. the project included a four-day language course with a teacher and twenty-five students at the university of dalat, and one-week language course with a teacher and thirty students at the ho chi minh city university of technology (hcmcut). the participants were selected from the universities based on a 1-week test at the start of the project. the results of the test determined which student would be included in the classes. the project ended in 2016. the course had an impact on the development of the students’ language skills, knowledge, and attitudes toward the swedish language and culture, as well as on their cultural sensitivity (daleng 2017 ; daleng 2018 ; daleng 2019 ).
