Leonard Hershey was born in Chicago on August 11, 1902. He received his BS from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, 1925 and his PhD in anatomy from the University of Michigan, 1929. He joined the staff at Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor of anatomy in 1932 and was promoted to associate professor in 1937 and professor of anatomy in 1948.

Dr. Hershey was the author of more than 40 publications including Fertilization in the Sperm Whale (1954) and Follicular Injection of Sperm (1955). He was an active member of several scientific societies including the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Society of Zoologists, the American Society of Parasitologists, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the National Academy of Sciences.

He was a prolific writer and lecturer and, among his many awards, the University of Pennsylvania awarded him the degree of Doctor of Science in 1955. Dr. Hershey retired from Johns Hopkins and died in Baltimore on November 20, 1973.
