More particularly, the invention relates to an image processing apparatus, an image processing method and a program for executing processing of edge emphasis on an image for emphasis of a part of an image, such as a face, for example.
Conventionally, when a part of an image is to be emphasized, such as a face in a picture, generally processing of compression is first executed with a preset compression ratio and compression processing of a compression mode of high compression ratio is executed. The compressed image is separated into a binary image with high threshold and a binary image with a low threshold. The binary image with the low threshold is binarized to obtain the binary image with the high threshold. The binary image with the high threshold is post-processed to obtain the image which is to be emphasized. Further, the obtained binary image with the high threshold is subjected to processing of enhancement of feature density.
Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2002-163963 discloses a technique of extracting features of an image and executing image process and the like to emphasize the image.
Further, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2006-078614 discloses a technique of extracting a face in an image, scanning the image from the center thereof, and executing principal component analysis to determine a direction of light having an illuminance to be emphasized.
The document “Face Detection and Recognition” written by Kenji HANCOCK and Toshio SUZUKI published on Jun. 25, 2003 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. discloses a method of detecting a face in an image. The detection method includes a detection step, a learning step and a detection step. The detection step extracts a region where the face is present from the image, and the learning step adjusts the detection step to the region. Further, the detection step recognizes the face in the region. Further, the detection step includes a distance measurement step and a region selection step. The distance measurement step measures a distance between the region extracted in the detection step and each of a plurality of reference regions. The region selection step selects the reference region which has the shortest distance from the region extracted in the detection step. The learning step adjusts the detection step in the region selected by the region selection step. Further, the reference region is rotated to determine the face on the region to be the reference region.
